Top Secret! – A Spoiler-Laden Review

In a delightful romp through the absurdity of Cold War espionage, Top Secret! delivers a concoction of absurdity and musical numbers that could only come from the minds behind Airplane! Spoiler alert: if you haven’t seen it yet, you might want to reconsider your life choices.

Our hero, Nick Rivers, a rock ‘n’ roll sensation from America, is sent to the former East Germany to perform at a talent show that promises to unite the greatest acts from around the globe. Little does he know, this is not just any talent show; it’s a cleverly disguised front for a nefarious plot to launch an attack on Allied submarines. Yes, when you think ‘variety show,’ you probably don’t envision submarine warfare, but you haven’t seen this film yet.

Upon arrival, Nick meets the lovely Hillary Flammond, played by a charmingly oblivious actress who manages to look both confused and entranced at the same time. Hillary is involved in the French Resistance, which is a convenient plot device since, you know, someone has to save the day while Nick is busy trying to remember the lyrics to his own songs. Spoiler: it’s not going to be a smooth ride.

As Nick navigates through a series of hilariously ridiculous scenarios—like dodging spies disguised as various inanimate objects and engaging in a musical duel with a German folk singer—he inadvertently becomes embroiled in the Resistance’s plans. If you ever wanted to see a rock singer accidentally save the world while performing a duet, this is the film for you.

Things take a turn for the surreal when Nick discovers that the talent show is a front for a dastardly plan involving a Nazi officer and a plot to sink submarines. Who knew that a catchy tune could lead to such chaos? In a particularly memorable scene, Nick finds himself in a chase that defies all laws of physics, with a ridiculous amount of slapstick humor that feels like it was written by a team of caffeinated squirrels.

And let’s not forget the climax where, in a show-stopping finale, Nick performs a song while simultaneously thwarting the villain’s plan. The choreography is so absurd that it’s hard to believe anyone thought it was a good idea—yet here we are, laughing at the sheer audacity of it all.

In the end, love triumphs, the Resistance prevails, and Nick’s rock ‘n’ roll dreams come true, albeit in a wildly unexpected way. The film closes with a montage of sheer ridiculousness that leaves you questioning your own sanity and laughing uncontrollably.

So, if you’re in the mood for a film that combines espionage, romance, and musical numbers with a healthy dose of absurdity, Top Secret! is your ticket to a wild ride. Just remember: in the world of Nick Rivers, nothing is ever quite what it seems—especially when it involves a talent show and submarine warfare.
