Batman Begins: A Modern Shakespearean Spoiler Review
Act I: The Tragedy of Young Bruce
Enter Bruce Wayne, a noble child, burdened with sorrow.
Bruce: (clutching his parents’ locket) Alas, mine eyes have witnessed the cruel hand of fate that snatched away my kin! What villainy hath befallen me? I shall seek vengeance in distant lands!
Chorus: (to the audience) Mark ye this lad, for he shall don the mantle of the bat, and with it, a quest to rid Gotham of its foul stench of crime.
Act II: The Journey of the Soul
Enter Bruce, now a wanderer, amidst the shadows of the East.
Bruce: (to a wise mentor) Teach me, oh sage, the ways of fear and justice! For I shall strike terror into the hearts of those who roam the night!
Mentor: (with a twinkle in his eye) First, you must conquer thine own fears, young Wayne. Only then shall you don the cloak of the night!
Act III: The Birth of the Bat
Back in Gotham, the city sleeps in darkness.
Bruce: (in his cave) Lo! I shall become a creature of the night! With all my gadgets and a cape that flows like a river of shadows, I shall emerge as Batman!
Alfred: (entering with a raised eyebrow) Master Bruce, you know it’s just a costume, right?
Bruce: (dramatically) Nay, dear Alfred! It is a symbol! A symbol of fear for those wretched criminals!
Act IV: The Villains Appear
Enter Ra’s al Ghul, with a sinister grin.
Ra’s: (to Bruce) Thou art but a child playing dress-up! I shall cleanse Gotham with fire and fury!
Bruce: (clenching fists) I shall thwart thine evil plans, for I am the knight Gotham needs!
Act V: The Climax of Chaos
Gotham is aflame, and trains are derailing!
Bruce: (battling with Ra’s) You may wield the power of the League of Shadows, but you underestimate the will of a man driven by loss!
Ra’s: (laughing maniacally) Foolish bat! You cannot stop the inevitable!
Bruce: (with determination) Watch me! (defeats Ra’s and saves Gotham)
Act VI: The Dawn of a New Era
As dawn breaks over Gotham, Bruce stands tall.
Alfred: (with a smirk) So, Master Wayne, what now?
Bruce: (with a grin) Now, I shall be the guardian of this city. They shall call me… Batman!
Chorus: (to the audience) And thus, a hero is born! But beware, for with great power comes an endless supply of brooding!
Exeunt omnes
