Grown Ups: A Play in Five Acts
Act I: The Call to Reunion
Enter Lenny: “Friends, oh friends! Our beloved coach doth lie cold, his whistle silent. Shall we not gather, as we did in yore, to honor his memory?”
Eric: “Aye, but what of our lives? I’ve traded my youthful dreams for carpool lanes and PTA meetings!”
Marcus: “Fear not! For what is life but a series of awkward reunions? Let us don our jerseys once more!”
Act II: The Gathering of the Ages
Enter the group at the lake house:
Rob: “Lo! The years have not been kind! I am but a shadow of the man who once soared upon the court!”
Kurt: “Nay! Thou art merely a larger shadow, my friend. Look upon us all, we are but grown children!”
All: “Huzzah! Let us embrace our immaturity!”
Act III: The Games of Old
Enter the children, full of youthful vigor:
Kid 1: “What strange customs dost thou practice? Why dost thou throw food?”
Kid 2: “And why art thou so competitive? Is it not but a game?”
David: “A game? Nay, it is a battle for glory! We shall reclaim our youth!”
All: “To the water balloon fight!”
Act IV: Revelations of the Heart
As the sun sets, laughter gives way to introspection:
Lenny: “Methinks I have lost my way in the realm of adulthood. Wherefore art thou, joy?”
Eric: “Aye, we have become slaves to our responsibilities!”
Marcus: “But look! Our children see the world anew! Shall we not learn from them?”
Act V: The Wisdom of Foolishness
In the final moments, they gather once more:
Kurt: “Though we are older, we are still fools at heart!”
Rob: “And that, dear friends, is our greatest strength!”
All: “To laughter! To friendship! To the glorious chaos of life!”
Exeunt:
Lenny: “And thus we return to our lives, not as grown-ups, but as eternal children!”
All: “Huzzah!”
