Shakespearean Spoils: The Lincoln Lawyer
ACT I: Enter the Car, Enter the Lawyer
MICK HALLER: (leaning against his trusty steed, a Lincoln car)
Lo! What light through yonder windshield breaks?
‘Tis but a day like any other, where I, a humble knight of the courtroom,
defend the scoundrels of this fair city.
Yet, what fate dost thou have in store, O fickle fortune?
CHORUS:
Hark! A case of great import approaches,
A wealthy youth of Beverly Hills,
Accused of a deed most foul—
Attempted murder, if thou please!
MICK HALLER:
(rubbing hands together)
Ah, sweet riches shall flow like wine!
A playboy, they say, with pockets deep,
Surely, this shall be a merry jaunt,
Where I, the clever advocate,
Shall dance circles ‘round the truth!
ACT II: The Plot Thickens
MICK HALLER: (in his car, speaking to his assistant)
Good sir, what news dost thou bring?
The boy claims innocence,
But I smell deceit like a cheap cologne.
What say you, shall we dig deeper?
ASSISTANT:
Aye, my lord, but beware!
The threads of this tapestry are tangled,
For the playboy’s tale is but a façade,
And hidden truths lie beneath the glimmer.
MICK HALLER:
(with a dramatic flourish)
Then let us unmask this charlatan!
For in this game of law and lies,
The stakes are high,
And my life hangs by a thread,
As shadows loom over my chariot.
ACT III: The Twist of Fate
MICK HALLER:
(gathering his wits)
What treachery is this?!
The boy doth not merely bleed innocence,
But verily hath blood on his hands!
A frame-up, a grand deception,
But who pulls the strings in this dark play?
CHORUS:
The law, dear Mick, is a fickle mistress,
And in her embrace, danger doth lie.
For the playboy’s father, a puppet master,
Doth conspire to see thee fall!
MICK HALLER:
(gasping)
By the stars, I am ensnared!
A web of lies, a dance with death!
But fear not, for I am a knight,
And I shall wield my sword of justice,
For truth shall out, even in the dark!
ACT IV: The Courtroom Showdown
MICK HALLER:
(addressing the court)
Ladies and gentlemen,
What say you to this tale of woe?
A boy, a gun, and a plot most sinister,
But I have the key to unlock this riddle!
JUDGE:
Speak, sir! Reveal thy findings,
For the court doth hang upon thy words!
MICK HALLER:
(with a flourish)
Behold! The evidence, a damning truth,
The playboy is but a pawn in a game,
And as the curtain falls,
The real villain emerges from the shadows!
CHORUS:
And thus, justice prevails,
As the scales are balanced,
Mick Haller, the savvy knight,
Doth emerge victorious,
But not without a price—
For danger still lurks in the alleyways of life!
MICK HALLER:
(leaning back in his car, a smirk on his face)
What a tangled web we weave,
Yet here I sit, in my trusty steed,
Ready for the next adventure,
For in this life of crime and law,
The game is never truly done!
